Do I have to join as part of a team?
No, you can join individually and you will be allocated to a team (usually 4-5 teens per team). If you do want to join as a team, please inform your local organiser providing all necessary details about the team and its members.
What equipment do I need to participate?
You will need a good internet connection and access to a laptop/PC.
Do I have to already know about coding?
No, we will teach you the foundations of coding, as well as other principles that support you in creating your project such as design thinking skills.
I already know how to code. Is this the best programme for me?
Our Global Hack programme is designed for beginners/improvers to give all our teen participants a fair start and for everyone to learn at the same pace.
If you already have some knowledge of coding, this could be a good opportunity to simply refresh your knowledge and give it a practical application as part of work on a team project. We can guarantee that you will still have fun!
If you prefer to expand your tech skills, we suggest you join one of our current dedicated tech courses. More info here. Additional courses will be launched in the future.
What will I be working on?
Our programme uses a set of pre-assigned real-life challenges inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, known as SDGs for short. The assigned SDG themes of the campaign will be announced within your local hack and you will get to pick one with your team. Together, you will come up with an idea to solve the chosen SDG. You will be given all the relevant tools to do so throughout the programme.
Where is everything taking place?
Some local hackathons will be fully online and some may be a hybrid mix (in person and online). You can find out more from the local organiser. The Global Demo Day will be held online so that teams from around the world can participate in realtime.
What is a Demo Day/Pitch?
At the end of the local hackathon, you will have a local Demo Day to pitch your projects to local judges and demonstrate how you have applied the elements such as coding, design and ethics considerations into your team project. A winner from your local hack will then be chosen.
What is the difference between the Local and Global Demo Day/Pitch?
Teams from each Local Demo Day will have their projects assessed by an expert panel of judges. The top 3 projects of each Local Demo Day will be entered into the Global Judging pool and invited to pitch at our Global Demo Day to senior experts with a global audience. This will then decide our overall global winners!
Will I get a certificate?
Yes! After successful completion of our programme all teens will receive a Certificate of Completion. Global Demo Day Winners will also receive an extra certificate for their achievement.
