Teens in AI: Spearheading Responsible AI Evolution, One Teen at a Time

New York & London, 18 July 2023 – Teens in AI, a trailblazing initiative aimed at inspiring the next generation of ethical leaders in Artificial Intelligence (AI), has received the esteemed “Excellence in Innovation Awardat the 2023 edition of New York, USA, head-quartered, Global Excellence Assembly Awards

Established by Elena Sinel, a globally recognised social entrepreneur and AI ethicist, Teens in AI has consistently addressed issues of inequality and discrimination in education. Since its launch at the United Nations AI for Good Global Summit in 2018, the initiative has enabled over 12,000 young people from diverse backgrounds, aged 12 to 18, to actively engage in shaping the technology that increasingly impacts their lives. 

The Excellence in Innovation Award acknowledges Teens in AI’s distinctive educational approach, which merges technical expertise in fields such as mathematics, artificial intelligence, and statistics with essential soft skills like presentation, collaboration, and communication.  

Additionally, the initiative fosters business acumen and product development skills, encompassing pitching, networking opportunities, business mentoring, and design thinking. 

The curriculum of Teens in AI is centred around crucial skills, including design thinking, ethical artificial intelligence, and responsible design. These elements contribute to their unique delivery of hybrid learning experiences for young minds globally, creating an educational journey that equips teens for future challenges while instilling a passion for learning and innovation. 

The Global Excellence Assembly (GEA) said: “Teens in AI’s work transcends the realm of AI and education. Elena Sinel’s comprehensive experience in international development, with a focus on poverty reduction and rural livelihood development, forms the foundation of Teens in AI’s innovative approach”.  

The organisation collaborates with global entities, educational institutions, and tech companies to address the challenges posed by the digital divide and underrepresentation in AI collectively. 

The GEA added: “The innovative concepts of Teens in AI present numerous advantages over existing solutions or standard development practices. They are moulding a generation that will drive positive change and foster a society anchored in human-focused values. The initiative places a high priority on the education and development of its participants, promoting a society that values diversity, inclusivity, compassion, empathy, and cooperation”.

The initiative has empowered over 12,000 young people from diverse backgrounds globally, providing them with invaluable skills and knowledge in the AI field. Their influence extends to over 117 regions worldwide, with a dedicated effort to include communities traditionally underrepresented in tech and AI. 

In closing, the GEA said: “Under Elena’s leadership, Teens in AI has truly made significant strides. The initiative continues to work towards a more inclusive, equitable, and responsible future in AI, making a difference one teen at a time”.
